Monument (2015) was made over five years from 2010-2015. In Croatia in the 1990s three thousand anti-fascist monuments were destroyed. Grubi’c originally wanted to make a film which included interviews about this problem, but the scenario changed when he saw the monuments again and decided to let them speak their own story about their ‘metaphysical life’. Although it may not be visible, several of these monuments were bombed or partially destroyed. A poetic-experimental documentary about the condition and ‘life’ of monuments the resulting work creates an existential, or even spiritual resonance to the political issues questioning the purpose of monuments today.
